ENDODONTICS means “inside the tooth” and is most commonly known as Root Canal Treatment (RCT).
Inside the tooth, we can find the Dental Pulp, which contains the nerve of the tooth, blood vessels, and cells that provide nutrients to the tooth from the inside. The main function of the pulp takes place while the tooth is developing. When the tooth is fully grown, the pulp continues to build up dentin to move the nerve away from aggressions such as cavities, deep restorations, or fractures.
Dental Pulp must be surrounded and protected by dentin. When dentin is lost, the pulp may become infected by mouth microorganisms that get inside and destroy the cells, initiating inflammation, pulp necrosis, and abscess. A tooth with an inflamed or necrotic pulp with an abscess is very painful, and that’s why Root Canal Treatment removes the pulp instead of extracting the tooth.
Endodontic therapy is a highly effective way to save teeth and offers a wide range of procedures for any specific case. Diagnosis and treatment must be accomplished with precision. The experience of an Endodontist is a key factor in solving each particular case.
